Kate Noelle "Katie" Holmes (born December 18, 1978) is an American actress who first achieved fame for her role as Joey Potter on The WB teen drama Dawson's Creek from 1998 to 2003. Her part on the show, only her second professional role, made Holmes a star. Her movie roles have ranged from art house films such as The Ice Storm to thrillers such as Abandon to blockbusters such as Batman Begins, but she has not found the same success in films as she did on television and admits most of her films have been "bombs". Weeks after ending her engagement with actor Chris Klein, Holmes began in early 2005 a highly publicized relationship with actor Tom Cruise, sixteen years her senior. In June, two months after they first met, she became engaged to Cruise. Their relationship has made Holmes the subject of international media attention, much of it negative, the press speculating that the relationship was a publicity stunt to promote the couple's films. Many reports commented negatively about the interest of Holmes, born a Roman Catholic, in Cruise's religion, Scientology. The couple announced Holmes was pregnant in October 2005; on April 18, 2006, she gave birth to a baby girl, Suri Cruise. In an interview given to Vanity Fair, Katie bemoans all the negative publicicty surrounding Tom's somewhat bizarre behaviour of late. It's hard to accept that all is well in the couple's Scientological paradise, when rumours are running rampant about hiccups within the relationship. One cannot help but speculate that something is amiss, when all the tabloids are headlining with 'Where's the Baby?' Amidst announcements of marriage between the recently 'fired from Paramount' Tom Cruise and the 'I was raised Catholic' Katie, the undercurrent is rife with comments about who is going to win: Scientology or Catholicism. Friends of Katie are wont to comment about the 'dead look' in Katie's eyes, that the girl is simply not the same vivacious sweetheart they knew before Tom Cruise came into her life. Katie is quick to defend her fiance and says she is hurt by all the negativity; but, her Scientology 'minder' is with her at all times, even at an all girl party thrown recently and the word of the day concerning this 'minder' was creepy. Katie Holmes, at age 27, becomes ever more appealing in looks, as she attempts to make her mark as a celebrity. We're thinking she may miss the days of beach parties and carefree titty showings, now that she's learning how her almost husband, Tom Cruise, wants her to live. While Scientology has worked for many, not the least of which is Kelly Preston and John Travolta, the poster children for clean, wealthy living, Tom's erratic behaviour is getting the sort of publicity no one welcomes. We wonder what effect it will have on Katie, whose eyes were aglow with the vivacity of youth and fun.
