The celebutante-turned-model has ended her five-month engagement to Greek shipping heir Paris Latsis, Us Weekly reports, quoting a statement it said Hilton released to the magazine. "I'm sad to announce that I've called off my engagement. Over the last couple months I've realised that this is the right decision for me. We remain best of friends, and I'll always love him. I hope people will respect my privacy during this emotional time," Hilton told the magazine.
Hilton's publicist did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press, but eventually gave it up: "I'm still young and have a very active career that I'm not prepared to give up. I've worked very hard to get to where I am. Paris is a great guy and we will handle this with dignity and respect.
"I love Paris. He is my best friend and it will be that way forever. This man treated me as no man ever has. We will also be business partners and have movies in the works," the statement said.
Hilton said last month in an interview in Vanity Fair that she was looking forward to settling down and was thinking about having a baby. She rejected his first engagement ring because the diamond was yellow, so another 24-carat emerald-cut diamond ring estimated to cost $2 million had been ordered.
The couple had planned two weddings -- one in Los Angeles where she lives and another in Greece - but had set no date.
The engagement may have been called off, but Paris Latsis has only kind words for his ex-fiancée, Paris Hilton, reports The Associated Press.
The 22-year-old Greek shipping heir called Hilton ''the most incredible woman I have ever met in my life,'' in a brief statement released through Hilton publicist Elliott Mintz.
''I respect her decision and appreciate the very kind and generous manner in which she is handling her very difficult decision,'' Latsis said. ``This was the best experience of my life and I will always be grateful for it.''
There were rumours that the couple's families were concerned about Mr Paris' continued unemployment and Miss Paris' whirlwind of a social life. Latsis' father, Gregoris Kasidokostas, hasn't commented on the break up, but had said before he thought postponing the wedding would be "common sense", according to People magazine's website.
Hilton, 24 and Latsis, 22, became engaged in the northern hemisphere spring. "I'm so in love and grateful to have found such an honest and loyal person," she told Us Weekly at the time. "I feel like we were meant to be, and I'm happy to have found someone to spend the rest of my life with. He's amazing in every way."
Latsis gave the 24-year-old hotel heiress a 24 carat, $US5 million ($A6.5 million) diamond engagement ring. It was not immediately clear what would happen to the ring. But we bet she keeps it for her collection ....
